Chapter 17
Chapter 17 — "The Draft"
TL;DR: The Drafting Masters — patriarchs and matriarchs of the great real-world Gold Houses — pick their champions in a public draft by speeches and gold staffs, and Darrow is selected by Fitchner, the slovenly Proctor of House Mars.

Summary: The students learn that the Institute year is not a class — it is a war. Twelve Houses, each tied to a Proctor, will compete year-round in a mass strategic game across the Institute's wild terrain. To set the stakes, the Drafting Masters arrive on opening day: the actual heads of the great Gold Houses across the Society, here to bid for the year's most promising heirs. Each Master in turn taps a candidate with a gold staff, claiming them for House and patronage. Darrow performs at the high end of the trials and watches his rivals get chosen by the noblest names. He is finally claimed for House Mars — by Fitchner, a sweat-stained, ironic, mid-rank Proctor in mismatched armor whose House is famous for raw violence and scant strategy. It looks like an insult. By the end of the chapter Darrow understands that being placed under Fitchner — apart from the high-prestige Houses Augustus, Bellona, and Augustinian — may also be camouflage. Mustang of House Minerva and Cassius of House Bellona are also shown; the Jackal goes to House Pluto.
Key scenes:
- The Drafting Masters processing into the amphitheater, robed in House colors.
- A long sequence of staff-taps assigning the highest-ranked candidates to noble Houses.
- Cassius au Bellona, golden and laughing, being claimed by his own father's House.
- Adrius "the Jackal" au Augustus picked for House Pluto; Mustang for House Minerva.
- Fitchner — slovenly armor, half-grin — tapping Darrow with the Mars staff.
Characters present: Darrow, Fitchner (introduced), Cassius au Bellona (introduced), Mustang / Virginia au Augustus (introduced), Adrius "the Jackal" au Augustus (introduced), the twelve Drafting Masters, Proctors, year's full cohort.
Locations / settings:
- The Great Amphitheater of the Institute — tiered marble, low sky overhead, banners of the twelve Houses ringing the upper benches.
Visual motifs: the banners of the twelve Houses ringing the amphitheater (Mars red, Minerva silver-blue, Pluto black, Apollo solar-gold, etc.); gold staffs tapping shoulders; the slovenly Mars Proctor Fitchner among polished peers like a wolf in stable dress; the gold-eye of Cassius across the room — beautiful, dangerous.
Emotional tone: ceremonial, judgmental, low-grade humiliation curdling into possibility.
Confidence: high — well-summarized in recap sources.
