Chapter 16
Chapter 16 — "The Institute"
TL;DR: Darrow arrives at the Institute on Mars — a vast walled academy carved out of mountain and forest where the Society's most ruthless Gold heirs are filed through a year-long war — and meets the Proctors, the masked Olympians who will run their game.

Summary: A shuttle delivers Darrow and the rest of the year's accepted candidates to the Institute, the academy that produces every important Gold of the next generation. The campus is enormous: marble halls, training fields, an ancient amphitheater, and beyond the walls the wild, semi-terraformed Martian landscape that will become the year's battlefield. The students are introduced to the Proctors — twelve masked Olympians, each named for a Roman god (Apollo, Pluto, Mars, Minerva, Diana, Mercury, etc.), who will run the year's game and embody the Houses the students will join. The Proctors are not impartial referees; they are partisans, and the students must learn fast. Darrow takes the measure of his cohort: arrogant scions, cold strategists, beautiful predators. The chapter is the world-establishing one — the cathedral the rest of Part III will burn.
Key scenes:
- Shuttle landing at the Institute spaceport, marble and live trees in view through the window.
- A processional walk through marble halls into the great amphitheater.
- The Proctors descending from the rafters in their masks — Mars in red, Minerva in silver-blue, Pluto in black, etc.
- Darrow scanning faces in the gathered cohort, registering rivals and possible allies.
Characters present: Darrow, the year's Gold candidates (most still unnamed), the twelve Proctors — Apollo, Mars, Pluto, Minerva, Diana, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Vulcan, Ceres, Juno, Bacchus.
Locations / settings:
- The Institute campus — marble citadel set into Martian mountain, cypress and pine on the slopes, low orbital sky beyond.
- The Great Amphitheater — semicircular stone, tiered benches, vaulted ceiling open at center to the sky.
Visual motifs: Roman-cathedral architecture rendered in cold Martian marble; the Proctors' masks gleaming gold-on-color; the year's Gold candidates standing in formation in their House-blacks; the eagle motif everywhere — banners, capitals, friezes; cypress and pine outside the marble.
Emotional tone: awe, calculation, restraint, predatory observation.
Confidence: high — Institute arrival is universally summarized.
