Mustang
Mustang
Names & aliases
- Canonical: Virginia au Augustus
- Cohort nickname: Mustang (her Institute name; for her wild riding and free-running personality)
- Family / House: House Augustus — daughter of ArchGovernor Nero au Augustus, Mars's most powerful Gold; twin of Adrius "the Jackal"
Role in the story
The novel's strategic equal to Darrow and its eventual romantic counterweight. Drafted into House Minerva at the Institute, she abandons it almost immediately to operate alone in the wildlands, wearing stag-furs, riding a captured pegasus, treating the year-war as a personal philosophical experiment. Saves Darrow's life in chapter 26. Captured and rescued in the Pluto/Antonia subplot. Reveals her identity as Augustus heir in chapter 40. Fights through her brother's keep in chapter 43. Stands beside Darrow through the closing-ceremony recruitment in chapter 44. By the novel's end she has publicly defected from her father's politics to Darrow's army at the cost of her family's wrath — and is going with him to the Society's center.
Personality / energy
Athena, recast as a teenage girl. Cool, dry, observant, often funny in a sharp register. Ten moves ahead and uninterested in showing it. Unsentimental about violence; sentimental about ideas. The only character in the year-war who reads Darrow correctly from inside-Gold-aristocracy without any Sons-of-Ares prep. Has a wry crooked half-smile that people who don't know her mistake for kindness.
Physical description
Late teens. Athletic and lean, smaller than most Golds — closer to Darrow's pre-carve height-band than to Cassius's. Wheat-gold or honey-gold hair — distinctly lighter than the deep golden-bronze of Cassius — kept short and tousled or pulled back loose. Gold eyes of the Gold caste, but lighter and warmer than the deep-amber of more arrogant Golds. Pale Gold skin with a freckle of Mars-sun at the cheekbones. A small, half-amused mouth that goes flat when she is deciding to do something.
Outfit / clothing notes
As a Minerva initial cohort member: silver-blue Minerva colors over Gold black. As a wildlands ranger: Gold black under a stag-fur cloak; soft leather riding pants; deer-hide boots; a razor at her hip; a small bow as a secondary weapon. As an Oathbreaker: Gold black, no House sigil; a wolf-pelt cloak in winter; a long razor and a smaller blade; her short hair grown to her jaw by Part IV. Closing ceremony: Gold black formal dress under an Augustus-color sash; pulled together but unornate, a quiet rebuke to her father's pageantry.
Signature objects
- A captured pegasus — gene-engineered flyer with mottled gold-tan feathers and a Minerva stripe she has scrubbed off. She is one of the few Golds who flies it well.
- A small razor — fitted to her hand, neither rapier-flashy nor brutalist; the tool of a precise mind.
- A leather notebook — she takes notes on the Houses, the Proctors, her brother. Carried always.
- A small horn-handled knife — a Mars-rust-toned hunting blade for camp work.
Visual motifs
- Wheat-gold hair against pine forest and against Gold black armor.
- The pegasus silhouetted against a Martian dawn.
- Stag-fur cloak across one shoulder; the cloak's antler-clasp.
- Mustang and Darrow back-to-back in courtyard fights — the saga's iconic visual partnership.
- A leather notebook open on her thigh by firelight.
Magic / power signature
None — strategic intelligence, riding, archery, razor work; no mystical powers.
