Summary: The Institute, on Mars, is the academy that forges every important young Gold. Entrance is by invitation and earned by trial: a multi-day gauntlet of intellectual examination, physical combat, holographic strategic war-game, social-engineering interview, and one brutal logic-of-power dilemma after another. Darrow walks in as Darrow au Andromedus. He sits the academic examinations in Latin, Greek, history, and Society law and dispatches them; he wins his combat trials with a discipline that surprises the proctors; he wins the social trial by the simple advantage of having actually lived the lives the test pretends to assess. He scores in the top tier. The chapter ends with him receiving an Institute summons — vellum, gold seal, Imperator's signature — and the directive to report at the appointed date for House Selection. The Society has, formally, accepted Darrow as one of its own.

Key scenes:

  • A row of Gold candidates at long examination tables, pens scratching, proctors in pearl-gold robes.
  • A combat pit: Darrow with a razor against a Gold opponent, the strike that surprises both the foe and the watching Proctors.
  • A war-game holo: Darrow making a counter-intuitive sacrifice that wins a strategic trial.
  • The Institute summons letter being placed in his hand — vellum, gold wax, an embossed eagle.

Characters present: Darrow, unnamed Gold candidates, Institute Proctors (introduced as a class), Dancer (offstage, pickup).

Locations / settings:

  • The Examination Halls — vast, vaulted, marble, beam-lit; rows of long oak tables; busts of dead Gold patriarchs in alcoves.
  • A Combat Pit — circular, sand-floored, mirrored above, a half-circle of Proctor benches.
  • A Strategic War-Room — concentric holo-tables, a topographic Mars projection.

Visual motifs: vaulted marble and Latin inscriptions; pearl-gold Proctor robes; a single razor flickering between rapier and whip in a sand pit; the embossed eagle of the Institute on a folded vellum letter; the gold wax seal at the threshold of the next life.

Emotional tone: controlled, surgical, alert; the cold satisfaction of a Red beating Gold children at their own game.

Confidence: medium-high — the testing is summarized in recaps but with less granular detail than the Institute-arc proper.
