Chapter 14
Chapter 14 — "Andromedus"
TL;DR: Darrow is christened with his cover identity — Darrow au Andromedus, scion of a vanished minor Gold house — and is loaded with the forged genealogy, mannerisms, and family history he must wear into the Institute.

Summary: The Sons of Ares present Darrow with his new public identity: Darrow au Andromedus, of House Andromedus, a minor Gold house from a remote province whose records are conveniently incomplete. His forged biography is delivered like a script: parents (deceased), tutors (verified), schools, family colors, House sigil, dueling history, social register entries. He memorizes a family tree he will need to reproduce on demand at a Gold dinner table. He memorizes the lies that hold his lies up. He stands in front of a mirror and, for the first time, sees a Gold who is also Darrow looking back. The chapter ends with Darrow holding the small gold ring that bears the Andromedus crest — a ring that, by Society law, Reds may not even touch — and putting it on his own finger.
Key scenes:
- A long debriefing room session: Dancer and a Sons of Ares spymaster walking Darrow through his cover.
- A holo of the Andromedus family tree projected over a low table.
- Darrow at a mirrored wardrobe, dressed in Gold black for the first time.
- The Andromedus signet ring sliding onto Darrow's finger.
Characters present: Darrow, Dancer, Mickey, an unnamed Sons of Ares spymaster.
Locations / settings:
- Sons of Ares debrief room — long table, holo-projector, intelligence files, Andromedus family tree shimmering above.
- A wardrobe-fitting room — three full-length mirrors, racks of Gold-cut clothing in black and storm-gray.
Visual motifs: the holographic family tree, gold lines branching against a dark wall; the Andromedus crest — a horse rampant under a single star — engraved on a small gold signet; Darrow's gold-irised face for the first time inside a Gold's clothing; three reflections in three mirrors, each one slightly different.
Emotional tone: ceremonial, mask-fitting, quietly terrified, resolved.
Confidence: medium — the cover-identity beat is well-attested but specific scene texture is interpolated.
