One-sentence summary: Charlie is presented to the Lombardy Convocation in a candlelit private dining room and meets the rival villains one at a time, each greeting more polite and more dangerous than the last.
Paragraph summary
The Convocation's opening dinner. A long table in a long room: gilded cornices, candle-lit chandelier, dark wood, frescoed ceiling, eight or twelve principals plus their seconds, every one of them dressed in the unmistakable uniform of inherited money. Mathilda introduces Charlie. He is moved through the receiving line. Anton Dobrev — the Convocation's chair, an old peer of Jake's — greets him first; courteous, attentive, faintly fond. Roberto Gratas — second chair, sharper-eyed — greets him second; courteous, attentive, faintly hungry. The other principals each get a half-page sketch worth of attention. Charlie says little, eats less, and watches a lot. By dessert, every member of the room has read him; Charlie has read perhaps three.
