Chapter 15
Chapter 15

One-sentence summary: Charlie flies to Italy with Mathilda and a small protective detail; Lake Como swallows the plane in alpine cloud, and the Grand Bellagio Hotel rises out of the water as if it were carved by money over centuries.
Paragraph summary
The transatlantic move. Charlie boards a private flight for Milan; on landing, he is moved by car along the lake road as the world goes Italian — terraced gardens dropping straight into water, villas in pale stucco, mountains hung in cloud. The Grand Bellagio Hotel arrives by water — a dock approach is preferred; the hotel itself is a five-story pile of antique stone, frescoed ceilings, gold leaf, deep alpine air. Mathilda has prepared the room. The cats remain at home. The protective detail is small and excellent. Charlie is shown to a suite that is older than every room he has ever stood in, and given an evening to acclimate before the Convocation begins.
