TL;DR: First cut to modern Seattle. Jimmy is in his apartment, a month into exile, navigating a careful new life and getting ready to keep an appointment he didn't ask for: a federal Treasury agent is on his way over.

The book introduces its B-plot by handing the camera to its old antagonist and letting him be a person.
What happens
A small Seattle apartment. Venetian-blind shadow bands striping the floor. A pixel-block laptop on a wooden desk, a coffee mug, a leather notebook open to a half-page of careful handwriting. Jimmy is there — older, beard now silver-grey, no wizard hat, dressed in modern street clothes — making the apartment look lived-in for the agent who is about to ring the bell. The book is precise about how rehearsed his casualness is.
The agent (we don't yet know which of Miller and Murphy) arrives. Jimmy lets him in, offers coffee, settles into a conversation about a financial-crime pattern the agent has been chasing for months and would like an outsider's opinion on. Jimmy gives him exactly the outsider's opinion he wants — accurate, helpful, modestly framed. The agent leaves grateful. Jimmy closes the door, exhales, sits down, and writes a single line in the notebook before closing it.
Key moments
- The apartment as costume. Every prop chosen to signal "I am exactly what you think I am."
- The coffee offer. Jimmy as a host. The book is letting us see, for the first time, a Jimmy who is not playing for the room.
- The single line written after the agent leaves. The book does not tell us what it says.
Character shifts
Jimmy in book one was the antagonist as ego. Jimmy in this chapter is the antagonist as discipline. The book is going to spend the rest of the novel making us decide whether the discipline is real.
Why it matters
The B-plot needs the reader to invest in Jimmy fast. The chapter does that by trusting his stillness rather than his speeches — which is itself the most persuasive evidence the book offers that he has changed.

- Redemption as work, not declaration.
- The texture of a performance that has become a habit.
- The federal-investigation register as a slow B-thriller running under a slow A-comedy.
