Chapter 32

Chapter 32 — "Antonia"

TL;DR: Antonia's long-coiled betrayal lands — she defects to a rival House mid-march, taking with her secrets, soldiers, and the trust the Mars cohort thought it had earned, leaving Darrow exposed at the worst possible moment.

Summary: Mid-march toward Mustang's capture site, Antonia makes her move. She and a small loyalist faction within Mars defect — slipping the column at night, riding hard for an enemy House (and, behind that, for the Jackal's deal-network). She takes intelligence with her: Mars's troop counts, route, the wolf-and-spear's standing alliances, and at least the rough outline of how Darrow has been operating as the actual brain of the cohort. Mars wakes at dawn to a thinner column and a new enemy. Worse, Antonia carries the seed of the dramatic-irony bomb: she has put together — over months of watching — the suspicion that Andromedus is too good a tactician to be a minor House heir. She has not yet told anyone. She is keeping it. The chapter is the second collapse of trust inside Mars in fifty pages, and Darrow ends it knowing that everything from here is a knife-edge.

Key scenes:

  • A pre-dawn camp on a forested ridge: empty bedrolls, missing horses, a single torn Mars banner left as goad.
  • Cassius's white-faced realization at the camp's edge.
  • Sevro tracking the defectors' tracks, returning grim — they are too far gone to overtake.
  • Darrow in firelight at the empty bedroll of Antonia, picking up an object she left behind, knowing what she has and has not yet revealed.

Characters present: Darrow, Cassius, Sevro, Roque, Quinn, Pax, Mars cohort, Antonia (and her defected faction, fleeing).

Locations / settings:

  • A forested ridge mid-march — pine, mossy ground, ash of an extinguished campfire, predawn fog.

Visual motifs: empty bedrolls in mist; a torn Mars banner trampled in the moss; Sevro crouched over a hoofprint; Darrow at a dying fire holding something Antonia left behind.

Emotional tone: betrayal, exposure, the cold-water shock of every plan recalibrating mid-step.

Confidence: medium-high — Antonia's defection is summarized in recaps; specific blocking interpolated.
