Chapter 9

Chapter 9 — "Tube Between Two Ships"

TL;DR: While the aliens fabricate a docking tube in the void, Grace exchanges samples to test for atmospheric compatibility and reflects on the spin-drive technology that brought him here.

Summary: Grace watches, awed, as the alien craft extrudes a long, glassy, off-white tube across the gap toward the Hail Mary. They are building the connection in real time, with materials he has never seen. While the construction proceeds he traffics small sample chambers back and forth — air, water, basic gases — both species needing to understand whether their atmospheres are compatible enough to share a tube. They are decisively not: one ship's air would kill the other's crew almost instantly. Grace also reflects, in a long flashback strand, on the spin-drive engine that propels the Hail Mary: how Astrophage, when stimulated, releases stored energy as raw thrust, making interstellar travel finally physically possible. The tube nears completion. Whoever is over there is about to be visible.

Key scenes:

  • The slow growth of a translucent docking tube extruding from the alien vessel
  • Sample-bottle exchange — small canisters drifting on tethers between ships
  • Flashback to a high-bay engine test on Earth: the Hail Mary spin-drive lit, a bar of gold-white plume against blackened test walls
  • Grace at his ship's console reading off air-composition results aloud to himself

Characters present: Ryland Grace, the AI/Computer, the still-unseen alien crew, taskforce engineers (flashback, including Dimitri Komorov)

Locations / settings:

  • The expanding gap between the two ships, slowly bridged by an off-white tube
  • Flashback: a launch-facility test stand on Earth — concrete, scorch marks, gantries

Visual motifs: a long pale tube traversing black space as a single bold compositional spine, gold flecks of cooling thruster plasma, sample canisters drifting like beads on a tether, the cover's gestural-gold language used here for the spin-drive plume in flashback

Emotional tone: intent, awed, technically engaged, careful

Confidence: high — the docking-tube assembly and the spin-drive flashback are both well-attested in summaries.
