Chapter 26
Chapter 26

One-sentence summary: Anton Dobrev, who is in fact alive, walks into the room — and Charlie learns that he has been a stalking horse all along in a multi-year plot by Jake, Mathilda, and Dobrev to dismantle the Convocation from the inside.
Paragraph summary
A small interior somewhere on the island, the day after the dock. Charlie, drained, is sitting in Jake's old leather chair when the door opens and a man who is supposed to be dead walks in alive: Anton Dobrev, very much breathing. The chapter is the book's quiet exhale. Dobrev — courteous, weighted, faintly fond — explains. The whole sequence has been a long con. Jake's actual will: dismantle the Convocation. Jake's actual death: real, cancer, on schedule. The plan: install Charlie as visible heir, force the Convocation into the open, draw out Gratas, take the satellite, take the whales, take the leadership. Mathilda has been Dobrev's partner from the start. The cats have been on the inside throughout. Charlie was useful precisely because he didn't know — his confusion was the only piece they couldn't fake. Dobrev apologizes, in his way. Mathilda, off to one side, looks at Charlie with the kind of regret a manager has when she's spent two years lying to a colleague who turned out to be better than the lie.
