A small interior somewhere on the island, the day after the dock. Charlie, drained, is sitting in Jake's old leather chair when the door opens and a man who is supposed to be dead walks in alive: Anton Dobrev, very much breathing. The chapter is the book's quiet exhale. Dobrev — courteous, weighted, faintly fond — explains. The whole sequence has been a long con. Jake's actual will: dismantle the Convocation. Jake's actual death: real, cancer, on schedule. The plan: install Charlie as visible heir, force the Convocation into the open, draw out Gratas, take the satellite, take the whales, take the leadership.
