Chapter 18
Chapter 18

One-sentence summary: A private after-hours meeting between Charlie and Dobrev, one-on-one — and the meeting ends with Dobrev apparently dead, the hotel on fire, and Charlie running through frescoed corridors with the cabal already mobilizing to blame him.
Paragraph summary
After dark, Dobrev requests Charlie privately. The two men meet in a small library off the Convocation rooms — a fire in the grate, two chairs, brandy that goes untouched. Dobrev speaks with the warmth of an old friend of Jake's, hints at a longer story than the surface of this trip allows, and asks Charlie a series of questions that feel, in retrospect, like a final exam. Then it happens fast: a sound, a movement, a fall. Dobrev is on the floor and not breathing. Smoke is in the corridor. Somewhere on a lower floor, a gas line is doing exactly what someone meant it to do. Charlie, holding the wrong end of the scene, runs. Mathilda finds him on a service stairwell. By the time they reach the lake-side dock, the Grand Bellagio Hotel is glowing orange against alpine cloud and the Convocation's communications are already announcing what happened — and who they say did it.
Key scenes
- The library: firelight, two chairs, brandy
- Dobrev's last words — paternal, weighted, asking for Jake's nephew to look at him
- The fall — handled fast, deliberately ambiguous
- Smoke in the corridor; running footsteps; Mathilda intercepting on a stair
- The hotel from the dock — orange against cloud, reflected in lake-water
Characters referenced
- Charlie Fitzer (POV)
- Anton Dobrev — apparently killed (in fact the first leg of his fake death)
- Mathilda Morrison — running the extraction
- Convocation operatives — off-page, framing in real time
Locations / settings
- A small private library off the Convocation suite — firelit, intimate, dark wood
- Service corridors and a stairwell of the hotel
- The hotel's lake-side dock at night — the wide-shot money-image
Visual motifs
- Firelight on two faces, dark wood walls
- A body on a fine carpet, lit by the same fireglow
- Smoke curling along a frescoed ceiling
- The hotel's facade orange against alpine night, reflected upside-down in still water
Atmosphere
The book's strongest action set-piece. Played with the same restraint as the funeral and the explosion — devastating exactly because it is so composed.

Confidence
High for the meeting → Dobrev down → hotel burned → Charlie framed sequence (Wikipedia-confirmed). Medium for the precise visual staging.
