Julian Bellona

Julian au Bellona

Names & aliases

  • Canonical: Julian au Bellona
  • Family / House: House Bellona — Cassius's identical twin

Role in the story

The boy Darrow is forced to kill in the Passage. Julian is drafted alongside Cassius into the Institute year (chapter 17), introduced briefly in cohort scenes, and dies in chapter 19 — strangled with bare hands on a stone floor by Darrow, who could not find a way around the chamber's rule. Julian appears on-frame for at most three chapters (17, 18 if the Passage is chapter 19, and the Passage itself), and his death is one of the novel's defining moral wounds. He is referenced in nearly every subsequent chapter that involves Cassius.

Personality / energy

The gentlest Gold in the year-cohort. A reader of philosophy, a refuser of cruelty, a kind older-brother voice in private even though he is Cassius's twin. The novel deliberately makes him the wrong person to die in the Passage; that is the point. His face is, in the reader's mind, almost identical to Cassius's — but the eyes are softer.

Physical description

Late teens, identical twin to Cassius in genome and stature: tall (Gold-bracketed), classical athletic build, broad-shouldered. Long gold ringlets — the Bellona signature — kept slightly less-styled than Cassius's. Deep-bronze Gold skin. Deep-amber Gold eyes, but softer, more thoughtful, less direct than Cassius's. Same square jaw, same Roman-coin face — but a quieter mouth.

Outfit / clothing notes

Institute year (House Mars): Gold black with the Mars wolf-and-spear, like the rest of the cohort. Passage chamber (chapter 19): the same Gold black, but the chamber strips it of context.

Signature objects

  • A Bellona signet ring matching Cassius's — gold, embossed Bellona laurel.
  • A small leather book of philosophy — Marcus Aurelius — that he kept until the Passage and that, in some readings, ends up in Cassius's possession after.
  • The Bellona razor — twin to Cassius's, mercury-bright.

Visual motifs

  • A face Cassius's reader cannot help reading as Cassius's.
  • The softer eyes that distinguish him.
  • A Bellona signet ring on his right hand.
  • A small philosophy book.
  • A Passage torch behind him; long stone shadow at his feet.

Magic / power signature

None — competent razor work, gentler instincts than the cohort rewards.

Chapter appearances

17 (drafted), 18 (cohort introduction — brief), 19 (the Passage — death). Referenced in 28 (the brother-night), 32 (the Antonia-delivered proof), 33 (the Apologies confrontation).

Confidence level

High for role and physical description (Julian's identity-as-twin makes his appearance trivially Cassius-shaped); medium-high for the eye-softness specifics (interpolated from convergent fan summary).
