Chapter 2
Chapter 2 — "The Township"
TL;DR: Darrow rises from the mines to Lykos township the night before the Laurel ceremony, and the Reds' scrubbed, joyless underground city is introduced through the texture of family, custom, and the watching boots of Gray soldiers.

Summary: The chapter pulls back from the drill cabin to show Lykos itself: a Red mining colony bored into Martian rock, all corridor and common-hall, lit by lamp and ration. Darrow returns to his small home — his mother, his older brother Kieran, Kieran's wife and child, and his uncle Narol, who tipples often and grieves loudly. Eo waits for him; their love is sketched in small physical gestures rather than declaration. We meet the social architecture: Reds are the lowest of the fourteen Society colors, sold the lie that their backbreaking helium harvest will one day make Mars livable. Gray soldiers — caste enforcers — watch every gathering; Magistrate Podginus, a fat, corrupt Copper bureaucrat, looms as the face of Society authority in Lykos. Darrow, Eo, Loran (Darrow's cousin), and the rest of the clan ready themselves for tomorrow's Laurel ceremony, where the highest-producing clan will be awarded extra rations. Darrow knows, beneath his pride, that the contest is rigged.
Key scenes:
- Darrow's homecoming through the corridor-warrens of Lykos — narrow, rust-stained, lamp-lit.
- The family meal — Kieran teasing, Narol drinking, Eo quiet with intent.
- Eo and Darrow alone in their cramped chamber, the only privacy a curtain.
- Gray soldiers patrolling the township edges — the soft menace of an occupier.
Characters present: Darrow, Eo, Kieran, Narol, Darrow's mother, Loran (cousin), Magistrate Podginus (mentioned/glimpsed), unnamed Gray soldiers.
Locations / settings:
- Lykos township: a deep-bored Red mining colony — narrow corridor housing, a vaulted Common Hall, lamp light, ferric dust, recycled air.
- The Common Hall — vaulted, smoke-stained, where ceremonies and dances occur.
- Darrow and Eo's cramped sleeping chamber — curtain for door, mattress on floor.
Visual motifs: lamp-orange interior glow; ferric dust on wall and brow; the bone-and-sinew slimness of underfed Reds; Gray uniforms — smoke-colored, padded armor, low-slung pulse rifles; Eo's copper-red hair against the gloom.
Emotional tone: tender, weary, watchful, restrained.
Confidence: high — township setting widely described across recap sources.
