Eva Stratt

Eva Stratt

Name

  • Canonical: Eva Stratt
  • Aliases: "Stratt" (universal in dialogue), "the Administrator" (formal references)

Role in the story

Former European Space Agency administrator who, during the early days of the Astrophage crisis, is granted absolute supranational authority by a unanimous secret UN vote to lead the Petrova Taskforce. She doesn't request — she conscripts. She doesn't negotiate — she dictates. Every nation answers to her. She is the engine that builds the Hail Mary, recruits Grace, drafts every scientist she needs, kills regulations she doesn't like, and ships the mission. Without her, there is no book. She is also, on a personal level, an ethical brick wall whom Grace alternately resents and reluctantly admires.

Personality / energy

Glacial, decisive, allergic to small talk, and cold by design. She has chosen to be the person who can do the things polite people cannot. She is not cruel — she's monomaniacal. She solves Earth's problem with the same kind of "the job is the job" calm that a surgeon uses in an emergency room. Comedic energy: zero. Authority energy: total.

Physical description

  • Tall, perhaps 5'10" / 178 cm — visibly taller than most rooms she's in
  • White European, mid-to-late forties, possibly older
  • Dark hair, severe — pulled back tight, no nonsense, no styling for show
  • Sharp features, strong jaw, no-nonsense mouth, watchful eyes
  • A face that does not naturally smile and does not pretend to
  • Eyes: dark, piercing — render as gray or dark hazel

Outfit / clothing notes

Almost always:

  • A perfectly tailored dark suit (charcoal or matte black), single-breasted, minimalist
  • A plain white or slate button-down shirt underneath, top button typically done
  • Black flat shoes, never heels — this is a working uniform
  • No jewelry, no patterns, no mission patches, no national flags
  • Occasional override: a clean lab coat over the suit when she walks into a contained area

She looks like a senior intelligence official rather than a space administrator. Visual shorthand: a hard black silhouette in a soft-colored room.

Visual motifs (recurring objects, color associations, symbols)

  • A clipboard or tablet in one hand — always
  • Background figures of generals, scientists, diplomats at attention to her
  • A briefing-room with maps, sample bottles, charts behind her
  • Color palette: charcoal, slate, white, no warmth — set against any room's ambient color
  • A small Petrova-Line sample vial — held at arm's length, the object that drives every conversation

Magic / power signature

None — Stratt is fully human, no supernatural elements. Her "power" is institutional: she can pick up a phone and a country obeys. Render as: she enters a room and everyone else's posture changes.

Chapter appearances

Primarily in flashbacks: Ch. 3 (recruitment), Ch. 4 (Astrophage discovery, observation room), Ch. 5–6 (taskforce briefings), and recurring across most flashback sequences in the first half of the book.

Confidence

High for personality, authority, role, and outfit (the "always in a tailored dark suit" shorthand is uniformly described). Medium for exact facial features (text is sparse on specifics — we lock a sharp-featured European-coded forty-something).
