Dr Lokken
Dr. Lokken
Name
- Canonical: Dr. Lokken
- Aliases: Just "Lokken" in dialogue; first name not given in available summaries
Role in the story
Norwegian climatologist drafted into the Petrova Taskforce. She initially objects strongly to Grace's unorthodox theory of non-water-based life β her professional rigor flags it as unsupported β but her pragmatic intellect is exactly what the project needs. She designs the Hail Mary's transforming centrifuge structure (the boom-and-spinning crew compartment that produces 1g for the lab), one of the most consequential engineering choices in the entire mission.
Personality / energy
Sharp, skeptical, professionally pugnacious. Argues hard, then implements harder. Not warm but not cold either β a senior scientist whose respect is earned. The book uses her as a credible critical voice: when she stops objecting, the science has truly landed.
Physical description
Sparse in summaries. What we lock for visual consistency:
- Norwegian / Scandinavian-coded woman, late forties to fifties
- Average height, sturdy build, professional posture
- Light blonde to silver-blonde hair, kept short, practical
- Pale skin, fair features, light eyes (blue or gray)
- Clean-faced, no ostentation, glasses possible (sensible frames)
The book does not describe her face in detail β render plain, intelligent, slightly skeptical default expression.
Outfit / clothing notes
- A slightly rumpled professional sweater-and-trousers combo, or a clean lab coat over a button-down
- Norwegian-coded wool element if a sweater is shown β solid color, not patterned
- Modest jewelry at most (a simple chain)
- A clipboard or tablet present
Visual motifs
- A whiteboard mid-argument β Lokken is most often "the senior scientist with the chalk in their hand"
- A schematic of the Hail Mary's centrifuge geometry β her signature artifact
- Background figures of taskforce colleagues at attention to her objection
Magic / power signature
None β career climatologist and engineering contributor.
Chapter appearances
Background presence in Ch. 4β5 (Astrophage discovery / taskforce-briefing flashbacks) and recurring in flashback frames where the centrifuge is being designed. Probably not a foreground subject of any chapter image β she may only appear as one figure in a wide briefing scene.

Confidence
Low for face/clothing specifics (the text is sparse), medium for role and personality. Render as a Norwegian-coded senior climatologist; do not invent ostentatious detail.
