Chapter 20 — "Beetles and Spin-Down"

Summary: With a working predator in a dish, the next problem is delivery. The Hail Mary carries four small unmanned probes called Beetles — ostensibly designed for telemetry — that can be modified into one-way return-to-Earth couriers. Grace and Rocky install Astrophage-fueled engines and miniature Taumoeba payload chambers. As they work, the lab's Astrophage-fuel readings flicker — Taumoeba have escaped containment and contaminated the main fuel supply. They scramble. Rocky, working through his sphere's manipulator arms, helps clean the generators while Grace sleeps off exhaustion. Together they also finally finish what Ch. 17–18 left undone: nudging the centrifuge and thrusters back into a clean, stable spin so they can think without staggering.
