Chapter 21
Chapter 21 — "Arson"
TL;DR: In brittle dusk light above ellay, a whip-cracking man “pranks” the encampment by lighting its trash pile, the blue tarps and brush flash to orange, black smoke pushes the mountain lion downhill through ash, sirens, and chain-link gaps into the city glare.

Summary: A man with a whip returns to the brush-side encampment at dusk, the crack of leather like a dry lightning strike over tents and shopping carts. He flicks a lighter at the trash mound—plastic bottles, greasy takeout foam, damp clothing—and calls it a joke as a thin flame finds the blue tarp fringe and runs hungry into the chaparral. The camp becomes a tangle of melting nylon, coughing people, barking dogs, and the lion’s low herding circles at the edge of the heat, until the fire sheets up the slope and smoke lowers the sky. Helicopter rotors thud overhead, sirens paint red and blue on the scrub, and ash begins to fall like dirty snow across yucca spears and the lion’s whiskers. Driven by heat and the sting in its throat, the lion bolts through a tear in chain-link, skids down loose dirt and concrete spillways, and hits the flat glare of ellay—headlights, sodium streetlamps, hot asphalt. The chapter ends with the big cat pressed in shadow beside a wall tagged in neon paint, tasting burned plastic on the air and knowing the hills are on fire behind it.
Key scenes:
- Encampment in the brush above ellay: the whip man returns at dusk, snapping the bullwhip and setting the camp’s trash pile alight with a flicked lighter he calls a “prank.”
- Fire spread through camp: blue tarps catch, tents collapse, shopping carts glow and pop, smoke rolls; the lion circles the perimeter, then retreats as the brush ignites.
- Emergency encroaches: helicopter searchlight combs the hillside, sirens rise from the road below, ash drifts over scorched yucca and parched sage as people scatter.
- Descent into the city: the lion squeezes through chain-link, slides down a dusty embankment into street-level ellay—headlights, graffiti walls, heat-shimmered asphalt—seeking cover.
Characters present: narrator (mountain lion), man with a whip, encampment residents (unnamed)
