Eddie Willers

Eddie Willers (Edwin Willers)

Aliases: Eddie; "Mr. Willers."

Role

Special Assistant to the Vice President in Charge of Operations — Dagny's lifelong second, a role he has filled by quiet competence since they were both children at the Taggart estate. The novel's emblematic loyal company man: incorruptible, modest, capable, and never invited to the valley. The last loyal employee left at the end.

Personality / energy

Steady. Honest. Devoid of self-pity. Practical. Worships work and the people who do it. Lacks the spark of originality that distinguishes the strikers — and so cannot be one of them — but is exactly the kind of man whose loyalty makes the producers' world possible.

Physical description

Average height. Medium build. Sandy-blond hair, parted on the side, neat. Honest blue eyes. A round, open, honest face — Rand calls it "the face of a child." Mid-thirties (Dagny's age). No remarkable feature; the visual point is ordinariness.

Outfit

  • Office: brown three-piece business suit, white shirt, dark tie; sometimes shirtsleeves and a vest in late hours
  • Field: a long brown overcoat, soft-brimmed hat
  • In the desert coda (Ch. 30): rumpled work clothes covered in dust beside the stalled Comet

Visual motifs

  • A clean desk with an angle-poise lamp at midnight
  • A Taggart Transcontinental dispatcher's clipboard
  • Lunching at the workers' commissary — long fluorescent table, attentive across from the unnamed worker
  • The cab of a stalled diesel locomotive at desert dusk

Power signature

Not applicable. His "signature" is faithful, solitary lamplight at a desk.

Chapter appearances

1, 3, 4, 7, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24 (briefly), 25, 27, 30.

Confidence

High — Eddie is a fully drawn supporting character; his physical signature is consistent across summaries.
